Launching Congregation Meets for First Time

On June 19, over 60 people interested in the launch of our new 11:00 worship service attended a breakfast gathering. At that gathering 28 people committed to attending the 11:00 worship service regularly when it begins in September.  In addition, 10 people agreed to attend as "missionaries" from other worship services for 3 to 6 months. Six others who attended the event indicated that they are prayerfully considering whether or not to commit to attending the new worship service.

If you intend to support the new worship service with your attendance, and you have not yet made that commitment, please contact me HERE.

As we move forward in planning for the worship service, I give thanks to God for the people who are stepping up to form the core of this new congregation. I have never started a worship service from "scratch" nor been a part of a new congregation. I am very excited about the possibilities ahead.

There is much to do this summer and I encourage you to take part in some way in the development and creation of the 11:00 worship service and its congregation.

  • Continue to pray for the new congregation and its leaders
  • Encourage musicians to contact Mike Tooman at mike@brightonfumc.org. This includes musicians who are not connected with our church, but would love to play in a band.
  • Actively seek to invite friends and neighbors to come to a preview of the worship service on Sunday, July 24 or August 21 at 11:00 a.m.
  • Attend Worship Launch Gatherings on July 17 and August 7 at 10:45 for more information.

Brighton First Welcomes New Worship Leader for 11:00 Worship

The Staff-Parish Relations Committee of Brighton First is pleased to welcome Mr. Michael Tooman to the Brighton First community beginning April 1. Michael has been hired to team with staff and church members to redevelop the Sunday 11:00 worship service. Michael will be introduced to the congregation on Sunday, April 17. Tentative plans are for a "re-launch" of the worship service in October 2016. Michael will be working with a worship band and other teams in preparation for the worship launch. Please pray for him as he begins this important ministry.

Michael is thrilled to be the worship leader for the 11:00 worship service at Brighton First! Growing up down the road in South Lyon, Mike was raised in the United Methodist church there. He began singing in the children's choir and taking piano lessons at just four years old, going on to play in, and eventually lead, the worship band there.

Mike has always been an avid musician. In high school, he was a participant of the concert band, concert choir, marching band, jazz band, jazz choir, and theater programs. After high school, Michael's band, Avienne, achieved regional success in the metro-Detroit area following the release of their album, "Dreams. Lies. Revolution."

Michael has also written three musicals with his writing partner, Tyler Dean. Their third musical, "Sea Legs," which premiered at the University of Michigan in 2014, was picked up for an Off-Broadway production in the fall of the same year. He is looking forward to writing many, many more.

Michael is a graduate of Wayne State University, where he studied music theory and composition. Mike would consider himself quite a "music geek" and welcomes any questions or conversation regarding the subject.

Mike is ecstatic to be leading worship again. Music has always been a constant reminder to him of the absolutely wonderful grace of God and he looks forward to rediscovering that with you every week.
