Dear
Friends,
In
July, water flooded into the basement in the hallway adjacent to the fellowship
hall. New carpeting that had been installed just two weeks earlier had to be
removed and replaced. We replaced sections of drywall that were saturated with
contaminated water. An excavating company identified the causes of the flooding
by digging down along the outside wall to the foundation and footings. Tree
roots were blocking proper drainage and there was a crack in the wall. Over
this last month, repairs have been made to the drainage system and a French
drain has been installed along the foundation.
Unfortunately,
the repairs meant the loss of the perennial garden, trees and bushes at the
front entrance to the church. Volunteers removed and replanted many of the
perennials before excavating began and the hope is the plants will be returned
when the garden is replanted.
The
first good news is that insurance has helped to cover a good portion of the
cost of repairs.
The second
good news is that the Trustees and the Memorial Committee have agreed to create
a History Garden in memory of Dr. Harry Davis in the vacant space. It was Dr.
Davis’ wish that the church remember and honor its heritage. Along with
perennial plantings, the History Garden will contain the church’s bell, the
peace pole and reminders of United Methodist and local church history. The
design includes a path and benches.
We
are pleased to create a space where United Methodist history will be celebrated.
Harry Davis would be very pleased, too. If you have any questions, see Dan
Welton or Suzy Hutchison.
Blessings,
Pastor
Sherry
