Dear Friends,
Over
the last few weeks, we have considered the way we view work, money, debt,
saving and giving. This is the last Sunday for our series, “first: putting God
first in living and giving.” The series, inspired by Rev. Mike Slaughter’s book
Shiny Gods: Finding Freedom from the
Things that Distract Us, has called us to ask how we use the resources that
God has given us.
Slaughter
writes, “The word wealth as used in
the Bible is usually not about an abundance of money. The biblical concept of
wealth extends much further than mere silver or gold. It refers to the seeds
that God has placed in our hand—our talents, gifts and resources. Even in
challenging economic times, what we do with these resources has the power to
change the world.”
As
a community of faith, First UMC of Brighton has used its wealth, the talents
and resources of the people, to transform lives. From the hills of Appalachia
to the dental office and meeting rooms on our church campus, we are making a
difference. From homeless of Detroit to the hungry of Livingston County, we are
changing the world, one human being at a time. From worship to small groups and
classes, from the Well to Sunday school classes, we are a place of faith
formation for all ages.
I
invite you to pray that we, as followers of Christ, may continue to use our
talents, gifts and resources in ways that continue to bless and transform.
Blessings,
Pastor
Sherry
