Dear Friends,
I recently read the book Take this Bread by Sara Miles. She tells the story of starting a
food bank ministry in her church in San Francisco. What makes the food bank
surprising is that food is distributed in the sanctuary with the communion
table right at the center of all the activity. You can imagine how nervous this
makes members of the congregation.
Miles suggests that when the poor receive food, it is
an act of Holy Communion. She believes that worship and the real work of the
church happen when others are welcomed to the table.
On this weekend when we honor those who labor, we
have the opportunity to consider the “work” of Christ’s church and this faith
community. Is our work to sing hymns, pray together and listen to a sermon or
are we called to greater labor? What does it mean to be the church or to labor
as a follower of Jesus?
Our work as disciples is something we determine both
as individuals and as a community. In this time of rest from labor, let’s pray
for God’s guidance in what works we are called to in Jesus’ name.
Blessings,
Pastor Sherry
