Coffee, Lunch, Chat, Call

I began this week with a deadline looming. By Friday, May 1, five Vital Church Initiative Teams/Task Forces need to be in place. I began by praying over the people I had in mind to ask and then began asking.

I've been able to email some church members because we've had initial conversations. Others I am meeting face to face or making phone calls. This makes for a day that includes morning coffee, lunch out, afternoon meetings in my office and evening phone calls.

I'll admit that I have not been looking forward to this task. A weakness of mine: I have a hard time directly asking volunteers to do specific tasks, especially challenging ones. I tend to get very vague and apologetic, so when I invite people to ministry, they'll ask things like, "So exactly what are you asking me to do?"

For the big "asks" I'm making this week, I've prepped myself with prayer and specific lists of what needs to be done. And, by God's grace, I'm enjoying myself. First, through all these meetings, I am getting to know church members in a new way and discovering their skills, gifts and passions. In addition, their response to the invitation to for the vital ministry of this church is inspiring. Brighton First members have a heart to be Christ for the world and bring others to share the same goal.

Continue in prayer. I'll keep you posted and list the members of teams once they are completely formed.
