The Brighton First Church Staff began reading the book Soul Revolution by John Burke in March. The VCI clergy peer mentoring group that Loretta and I belong to are also reading the book. At the heart of the book is Burke's challenge to dedicate 60 days to praying every 60 minutes, the "60/60 Challenge".*
Early in the book, Burke states the purpose of the 60/60 Challenge is to find fulfillment in a deeper relationship with God and with others. Burke goes on through stories and commentary to teach about the benefits of a life that is continuously attentive to God.
I will admit that Burke's theological perspective does not always sit well with my Wesleyan understanding of God's grace and God's desires. However, I am finding that there he offers wisdom for living a life informed by God's Holy Spirit.
I've also found the practice of stopping to pray every hour very enriching. I downloaded an app from my phone (Soul Revolution App) and the phone makes a sound at the top of each hour from 8:00 am - 8:00 pm. I have discovered that when the alarm goes off, I'm usually in the middle of something that needs a little prayer.
A few weeks ago Deacon Loretta and I were trying to race through a task. We had a time constraints and wanted to get as much done as possible. Our "prayer alarms" went off. We looked at each other, shrugged our shoulders, and took a few minutes to pray.
I have found myself anticipating the top of the hour and praying, even though I haven't been reminded to.
The 60/60 Challenge has heightened my awareness of God's powerful presence in a very real way. Today I am on Day 30 of the challenge. My hope is that when the challenge ends in 30 days that my practice of continuous awareness and prayer breaks does not end.
