Tiny House Doors

Brighton First has had a relationship with the Cass Community Social Services (Cass) for many years. Cass is a United Methodist mission in Detroit that seeks to improve the lives of people through shelter, food, transitional housing and empowerment.

Over the years, many volunteers from Brighton First have volunteers for projects at Cass, including cooking and serving meals, sorting, cleaning, painting and remodeling. Entire apartments and shared living spaces have been remodeled by teams from Brighton First. Clergy from Brighton First have been guest preachers at Cass’ mid-week worship service.

Two years ago, the congregation of Brighton First funded the remodeling and furnishing of an entire apartment in a brand new complex for formerly homeless persons who are disabled.

Cass Tiny House under construction
This Lent we will again be stepping up to change lives at Cass. As a congregation, we have committed to purchasing front doors for six “tiny houses” that are currently under construction. The houses, each 250-400 square feet, represent an act of hope for the city of Detroit. The planned neighborhood of tiny houses will be home to the formerly homeless. A few of the homes will also be available for purchase by Wayne State University students and retirees who wish to move to the community.

First Cass Tiny House dedicated
Each door on the tiny homes costs $500. With our donations, we will provide not only the entrance into a new home, but symbolic entrance into new life for new homeowners and an entire neighborhood. Please consider joining me in this special Lenten project.
