For Bulletin Cover August 19, 2012
Dear Friends,
Our current bishop, Bishop Jonathan Keaton, has been appointed to serve in southern Illinois in the Illinois Great Rivers Conference beginning September 1, 2012. He has served the Michigan Area since 2004. You are invited to a farewell event for Bishop Keaton on Sunday, August 26 at 3:00 at Redeemer United Methodist Church in DeWitt.
On September 1, 2012, we will welcome Bishop Deborah Kiesey as our episcopal leader in the Michigan Area of the United Methodist Church (Detroit Annual Conference and West Michigan Annual Conference). You are invited to a welcoming event for Bishop Keisey on Sunday, October 14 at 3:00 at Clarkston United Methodist Church.
Bishop Kiesey is the daughter of a Methodist pastor. She was raised in Iowa and attended Morningside College in Sioux City and Boston School of Theology. She was ordained in 1974 and served churches in Iowa. She was elected bishop in 2004. Since then, she has been serving the Dakotas Annual Conference. Bishop Kiesey is married to Brad Kiesey and they have two adult sons. She considers playing the piano one of her important spiritual practices. Her favorite hymn is “It Is Well with My Soul”.
Bishops are elected by both clergy and lay representatives from the church. They are appointed for four year terms and may serve in an Annual Conference for up to 12 years. The role of the Bishop is to give general oversight and supervision to the church. Bishops are called to lead the whole church in claiming its mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. They lead by discerning, strategizing, equipping, implementing, and evaluating the fulfillment of the mission of the church.
Blessings,
Pastor Sherry
