Veterans' Day on Sunday, November 11, 2012

Bulletin letter for November 11

Dear Friends,
Veterans Day began as “Armistice Day”, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 a day to honor military veterans. It was on November 11, 1919, that the treaty ending WWI was signed.
Wilson said of this national day of observance: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.”
Wilson acknowledged the reality and necessity of military service, giving thanks for resulting freedom. He also offered the hope that the United States would be a leader in siding with peace and justice in the world.
He reflected the hope found in Micah 4:3, “God will judge between many peoples and will settle disputes for strong nations far and wide. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.”
We give thanks for the many veterans who have given this nation the gift of their service. We are thankful for those who are currently serving and for the families that support them. On this day, let our prayers be of thanksgiving and hope for a day when peace prevails.

Blessings,
Pastor Sherry
